LOCATION
Why is Horseshoe Las Vegas said to be haunted?
This Strip casino tower opened as the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on December 4, 1973, and for a few years stood among the largest hotels on Earth. On November 21, 1980, an electrical fire broke out in a ground-floor deli and raced through the casino's ventilation system, killing 85 people in one of the deadliest high-rise fires in American history β many died of smoke inhalation in upper-floor rooms before they could escape. Guests and staff in the decades since have reported the smell of smoke with no source, sudden chills near the old casino floor, and figures glimpsed in upper hallways once gutted by the blaze. "The building was rebuilt, but people say it never really let go of that day," a longtime Strip employee has said. Rebuilt for $50 million with new fire-safety systems and reopened in 1981, the property has changed names and owners several times since, most recently operating as Horseshoe Las Vegas under Caesars Entertainment.
