Why is Littleport said to be haunted?

Littleport was a quiet fen-edge town until May 1816, when disbanded soldiers and impoverished farm labourers, driven by hunger and unemployment after the Napoleonic Wars, rioted through its streets and marched on Ely. The uprising was crushed within days; a special commission tried the ringleaders, and five men were hanged at Ely in June 1816, their bodies displayed as a warning before burial in unmarked ground. Locals have long said the rioters never truly left: on the anniversary of the hangings, residents near the old routes the rebels marched report the distant sound of a crowd chanting and boots on cobblestones that no longer exist as cobbles. Others describe a gaunt, ragged figure seen briefly at dusk near the parish church, gone before a second look confirms it. The riots left such a mark on the Vagrancy Act of 1824 that some still call Littleport "the town the law remembers."
