Why is Mission San Juan Capistrano said to be haunted?

Founded on 1 November 1776 by Franciscan friar Junípero Serra, Mission San Juan Capistrano suffered its darkest hour on 8 December 1812, when a powerful earthquake struck during morning Mass and collapsed the mission's stone Great Stone Church, killing around forty worshippers, mostly Acjachemen converts, trapped beneath the falling bell tower. Docents and longtime visitors have long described hearing faint chanting or bells from the ruined church at dawn, and a figure in Franciscan robes glimpsed near the old cemetery has been reported for generations, tied in local memory to the friars who died ministering to the trapped and injured that morning. The mission is equally famous for its swallows, which traditionally return each March from their winter migration to nest in the ruins, a natural cycle that has made "the swallows of Capistrano" a fixture of American folklore.
