Why is Morris–Jumel Mansion said to be haunted?
Built in 1765 by British officer Roger Morris on a hilltop overlooking the Hudson and Harlem rivers, this is the oldest surviving house in Manhattan and briefly served as George Washington's headquarters during the 1776 Battle of Harlem Heights. Its most famous later resident, Eliza Jumel, bought the estate in 1810 with her husband Stephen and, after his suspicious death in 1832, married former Vice President Aaron Burr there in 1833 — a marriage that collapsed within months amid accusations Burr was squandering her fortune. Eliza died in the house in 1865, reportedly bitter and estranged from her family, and generations since have described her apparition on the staircase and balcony, sometimes said to shout at tourists to leave. "She's the landlady who never checked out," a museum guide has joked. City-owned since 1903, the mansion is widely considered Manhattan's most haunted house.
