Why is Mudhouse Mansion said to be haunted?
Built in the Second Empire style sometime around the 1870s near Lancaster, Ohio, this Rugh family farmhouse acquired one of the state's darkest local legends: that several children, said to have albinism, were kept locked away and eventually died or were killed inside, staining the walls with blood no cleaning could remove. No court record ever confirmed a crime, but generations of Ohioans grew up daring each other to approach the abandoned, mud-streaked house off Route 22, reporting cold spots, moving lights, and a sense of being watched from the empty windows. The Hartman-Mast family that later owned the property lived there for decades without incident, and historians argue the "murder house" story was invented well after the fact. The mansion was demolished on September 21, 2015, but the legend still circulates online.
