Why is Newton, Alabama said to be haunted?

On the edge of Newton, near a bridge over the Choctawhatchee River, stands the site remembered as "the hole that will not stay filled." In December 1864, Confederate soldier Bill Sketoe was hanged by a Dale County Home Guard company on suspicion of desertion, despite reportedly having paid a substitute to fight in his place. His large frame let his feet reach a shallow hole dug beneath the tree so the execution could proceed. After his death, locals said the hole was found swept clean every morning no matter how often it was filled back in. Writer Kathryn Tucker Windham popularized the story in her 1969 book "13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey," and a marker near Highway 123/134 still recalls the legend today.
