Why is Ramsey Cemetery said to be haunted?

Founded in 1851 with the burial of Alexander Ramsey, this Effingham County cemetery near Shumway sits beside a set of sandstone rock shelters carved with generations of names and initials β€” which earned it the nickname "Casbar Cemetery." Local legend describes a hooded figure with glowing red eyes moving among the caves at night, and older stories tell of a werewolf-like creature said to den in the shelters. Two darker tales also attach to the site: a warlock supposedly hanged from an oak near the graves, and a young man said to have taken his own life among the stones. Folklorist Michael Kleen traces the legends partly to Effingham County's rough 19th-century reputation, when outlaws really did use rock shelters like these as hideouts. Ghost-hunting groups still investigate the cemetery today.
