Why is Shepherdstown, West Virginia said to be haunted?
Founded in 1762 along the Potomac River, Shepherdstown claims to be West Virginia's oldest town and has long promoted itself as one of the state's most haunted, anchored by the historic Entler Hotel, now home to the Historic Shepherdstown Museum. Innkeepers there in the nineteenth century reported a guest who checked in and was never seen leaving, and staff and museum volunteers since have described footsteps on empty upper floors and doors that unlatch on their own. Nearby, locals tell of the "Rumsey ghost light," tied to inventor James Rumsey's 1787 steamboat trials on the river, said to appear as a glow over the water on foggy nights. "This town has never really let go of anyone who lived here," a museum volunteer told a regional paper in the 2000s. The town hosts an annual ghost walk each October built around these accumulated stories.
