Why is Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge said to be haunted?
Gold drew miners to Sumpter Valley in 1862, and by the early twentieth century three giant dredges chewed through the riverbed searching for it. The best-known of the three, now preserved as a state heritage site, carries the legend of Joe Bush, a phantom blamed for every jam, breakdown and mishap on deck since the 1940s. Former dredge hand Wes Dickson later admitted the name was a running joke started by a co-worker, George Hansen, who pinned anything that went wrong on "Joe Bush" β no worker by that name ever existed or died there. Decades on, visitors and paranormal investigators still report wet, bare footprints appearing on the dry decks, lights flickering without cause, and doors swinging shut on their own. The dredge inspired the "Skeleton Creek" book series and was investigated on the 2013 show Ghost Mine.
