Why is The House of Blue Lights said to be haunted?
On the far northeast side of Indianapolis stood the home of Skiles Edward Test, an eccentric millionaire who, beginning in the 1940s and continuing until his death in 1964, strung blue Christmas lights across his estate year-round β a private eccentricity that hardened into one of Indiana's most durable urban legends. The folk version claims Test kept his dead daughter's body in a glass coffin inside the house, illuminated by blue light, after she died on her wedding day; in reality Test had no such daughter, and the lights were simply his personal taste. Generations of Indianapolis teenagers nonetheless drove out at night daring each other to find "the blue lights," and after the estate was demolished in the 1970s the legend only grew stronger, still told at Halloween decades after the house itself vanished from the landscape.
