Why is Tinker Swiss Cottage said to be haunted?

Robert Hall Tinker, a wealthy Rockford industrialist, built his Swiss Cottage between 1865 and 1870 after touring Europe and falling in love with Alpine chalet architecture, filling the house with souvenirs from his travels. Tinker was an enthusiastic spiritualist who reportedly held sΓ©ances in the home during his lifetime, hoping to contact the dead, and after his own death in 1924 visitors and staff began describing the same courtesy returned to him. Docents have long reported a rocking chair that moves on its own in an upstairs bedroom, cold spots near the library, and the scent of pipe tobacco in rooms where no one has smoked in decades. A former caretaker described hearing 'a woman humming' on the stairs late at night, which staff associate with Tinker's wife Mary, who outlived him in the house by nine years.
