The Union Hotel has anchored Main Street in Flemington, New Jersey, since Neal Hart first built it in 1814, though the ornate Victorian facade standing today dates to 1878. Its most famous moment came in early 1935, when reporters and spectators packed its rooms and bar during the trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann, held in the courthouse directly across the street for the kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh baby β a case so sensational H.L. Mencken called it "the biggest story since the Resurrection." Staff and guests in later decades described footsteps in empty upper-floor hallways and a persistent chill in rooms once rented by trial-era journalists. "The whole building still feels like it's holding its breath from 1935," a former innkeeper once remarked. The hotel closed to overnight guests some years ago but its landmark building, a contributing structure to the Flemington Historic District, still stands on Main Street.
