What is the legend of The Curse of the Hope Diamond?

The Hope Diamond, a magnificent deep-blue gem now resting in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., is said to carry one of the most famous curses in the world. Legend claims the stone was originally prized from the eye of a Hindu idol in India, and that the theft doomed everyone who possessed it thereafter. The tales pile misfortune upon misfortune: the French merchant who brought it to Europe supposedly torn apart by wild dogs, King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette losing their heads to the guillotine, and later owners meeting ruin, madness, and violent death. The wealthy socialite Evalyn Walsh McLean, one of its last private owners, was said to have suffered a string of family tragedies while wearing it. When jeweler Harry Winston donated the diamond to the Smithsonian in 1958, he reportedly sent it through the ordinary mail, and the postman who delivered it later suffered accidents that fed the legend. Historians note the curse story was largely spun by dealers and newspapers to add allure and value. Yet the beautiful blue stone still glitters behind its glass, wrapped in whispers of doom.
