What is Bear Lake Monster?

Along the Utah-Idaho border, settlers of the Bear Lake valley have described a serpentine creature since at least 1868, when local Mormon pioneer and newspaperman Joseph C. Rich compiled a series of settler accounts into a widely reprinted story describing a monster with alligator-like features, short legs, and speed enough to outrun a galloping horse along the shore. Rich's original accounts, published in the Deseret News, quoted one settler describing the creature crossing the lake "faster than a horse could run on land, throwing water in every direction." Rich later admitted parts of his account may have been exaggerated for effect, but by then the legend had taken firm hold in local culture, and the lake's monster is still celebrated with the Bear Lake Monster statue and gift shop merchandise in Garden City, Utah. Some enthusiasts speculate the sightings could reflect an isolated population of a large, unidentified fish or a garbled folk memory blending pioneer storytelling with older Native American accounts of the lake. Limnologists note that Bear Lake's clear, cold water can produce fast-moving wave patterns and sturgeon large enough to account for the wake-and-speed descriptions without invoking anything unknown.
