What is Loveland Frog?
The Loveland Frog is an Ohio legend tied to the town of Loveland, along the Little Miami River, with roots reaching back to a 1955 account by a local businessman who claimed to see several frog-faced, bipedal humanoids gathered by the roadside at night, one reportedly holding a wand-like device that sparked. The legend resurfaced dramatically in 1972 when a police officer described a large, leathery, lizard-like creature crossing a road in his headlights, telling colleagues afterward, "it just stood there and stared at me," a sighting later echoed by another officer. Standing roughly three to four feet tall with rough green-gray skin and webbed hands, the Loveland Frog became a fixture of Midwestern cryptid lore and pop culture, referenced in cartoons and games. Investigators who followed up on the 1972 reports suspected an escaped pet iguana or large monitor lizard, unusual for the region and therefore startling in the dark, while the original 1955 account is generally treated as an early, unverifiable tall tale that later sightings were folded into.
