What is Momo the Missouri Monster?
In July 1972, the small Mississippi River town of Louisiana, Missouri, became briefly famous when several residents reported a seven-foot, black-furred, foul-smelling biped with glowing orange eyes lurking in the bluffs above town, leaving three-toed footprints and reportedly killing a dog. The panic began after teenagers found a mutilated dog carcass near Marzolf Hill, and within days armed search parties, reporters, and even a Bigfoot researcher had descended on the town, sparking a media circus. Local resident Doris Harrison told reporters: "It was big, black and hairy, and it smelled just terrible, like something dead." Sightings tapered off by autumn 1972, but "Momo" β a name coined by journalists combining "Missouri" and "monster" β remains a point of local pride, celebrated with a Momo Days festival and merchandise in the town today. Cryptozoologists have linked Momo to broader reports of the so-called Bigfoot phenomenon along the Mississippi Valley, part of a wave of similar humanoid sightings that swept the Midwest in the early 1970s.
