What is Squonk?
The Squonk is a wretchedly ugly, tear-soaked creature said to wander the hemlock forests of northern Pennsylvania, its loose, ill-fitting skin covered in warts and moles. According to lumberjack folklore first written down by conservationist William T. Cox in his 1910 book Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, the Squonk is so ashamed of its own appearance that it spends its life hiding at twilight and weeping, and can be tracked by the trail of tears and hiccuping sobs it leaves in the fallen leaves. One woodsman's account claimed: "I have known hunters, who, upon its capture, opened the sack to find only tears and bubbles, for the Squonk, on finding itself trapped, dissolves wholly into weeping." The most famous version of the tale describes a Pennsylvania hunter named J. P. Wentling who supposedly captured a Squonk in a sack, only to find, when he opened it at home, that the creature had wept itself entirely away, leaving nothing but tear-stained canvas. Folklorists treat the Squonk as a piece of deliberate lumber-camp tall-tale tradition, invented to entertain and haze newcomers rather than describe a real animal, alongside cousins like the Hodag and the Snallygaster from the same genre of American frontier humor.
