What is Tahoe Tessie?
Tahoe Tessie is the affectionate nickname for a serpent-like lake monster said to inhabit Lake Tahoe, the deep alpine lake straddling the California-Nevada border. Witnesses describe a long, dark, undulating creature, sometimes with humps breaking the surface, similar to other North American lake monster reports. Washoe oral tradition speaks of a mysterious being dwelling near Cave Rock, a sacred site on the lake's eastern shore long avoided by the tribe; this older belief merged over the twentieth century with modern sightings reported by boaters and residents, especially from the 1980s onward as local tourism and media embraced the legend and gave it its present nickname.
