What is Wampus Cat?
The Wampus Cat is a fearsome feline creature from Appalachian and Cherokee-influenced folklore, described as a large cat-like beast that walks upright on two legs, sometimes said to be half-woman and half-mountain lion. Older Cherokee stories tell of a woman who spied on a sacred male ritual and was cursed to wear the skin of a cougar forever, while later Appalachian settlers adapted the tale into a general mountain monster blamed for eerie screams and livestock disturbances in the hills of Tennessee, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Its glowing eyes and unnatural cry are said to warn travelers of its presence in the dark forest. As with much regional folklore, the legend likely blends genuine encounters with mountain lions or bobcats, whose calls can sound startlingly human, with older cautionary myths meant to explain unsettling nighttime sounds. No scientific evidence supports its existence as a distinct species.
