Why is Alice Austen House said to be haunted?
Clear Comfort, the Victorian Gothic cottage on Staten Island where photographer Alice Austen lived and worked for most of her life, was believed by Austen herself to be haunted. She traced the haunting to a Revolutionary War-era suitor who reportedly hanged himself in the entryway after being rejected β visitors have long claimed to hear his boots crossing the floor at night. An older neighborhood tradition also spoke of chains clanking in the cellar after midnight, attributed to enslaved people once held on the property during the Revolution. Since the house became a museum, caretakers have reported their own unexplained incidents, including a picture that fell and shattered three separate times in one night β activity staff have half-jokingly attributed to Austen's own restless spirit. The museum does not permit formal paranormal investigations, so none of it has ever been tested.
