Why is Amargosa Opera House and Hotel said to be haunted?
Marta Becket arrived at the crumbling Corkhill Hall in Death Valley Junction in 1967 after a flat tire stranded her nearby, and she spent the next decades painting a permanent audience of nobles, monks and dancers onto its walls and ceiling to perform for when live crowds were sparse. She staged shows there until her final performance in February 2012 and died in 2017, but staff and guests at the adjoining hotel say her presence lingers, particularly in Room 7, where guests report the scent of old theatrical makeup and a rocking chair that moves on its own. Former borax company workers who once populated this early-20th-century company town are also blamed for footsteps in empty hallways.
