Why is Attmore–Oliver House said to be haunted?
Built in 1790 and enlarged around 1834, the Attmore–Oliver House on Broad Street in New Bern, North Carolina, served as a Confederate and later Union field hospital after the 1862 Battle of New Bern, when wounded and dying soldiers filled its rooms during the war's early Carolina campaigns. Owned today by the New Bern Historical Society, the house has long carried a reputation as one of the city's most haunted buildings, with staff and visitors reporting unexplained cold spots tied to the old hospital rooms, a rocking chair seen moving on its own, and a doll collection upstairs that some claim shifts position between viewings. "New Bern has a lot of old houses, but this one holds onto its history harder than most," a local historical society volunteer has said. No longer operating as a full house museum, the Attmore–Oliver House still opens for Society functions and limited self-guided tours by appointment within the New Bern National Historic District.
