Why is Beechwood (Astor mansion) said to be haunted?

William Backhouse Astor Jr. bought this Bellevue Avenue estate in 1880 for his wife Caroline Schermerhorn Astor, known simply as "the Mrs. Astor," the self-appointed arbiter of New York high society who used Beechwood's ballroom to host her famous "Four Hundred," the guest list said to represent everyone who mattered in Gilded Age America. Richard Morris Hunt renovated the house in 1881 to suit her entertaining, and for decades after her death in 1908, staff and later owners described the ballroom as carrying phantom music and the murmur of a party with no guests. A theatrical "Astors' Beechwood" tour later staged costumed actors playing the family and staff, blurring, for visitors, the line between rehearsed performance and the older stories of the house's restless hostess.
