Why is Belasco Theatre said to be haunted?

David Belasco built this Broadway house at 111 West 44th Street in 1907 as his personal theatrical showcase, complete with a private apartment above the stage where the famously flamboyant producer-director lived and worked until his death in 1931. Almost immediately after, stagehands and performers began reporting his apparition in the wings and in a red-lit private box, watching rehearsals as he had for decades β€” sightings became so common in the 1930s that some crews reportedly refused to work certain shows. "He'd sit right there in that box like he still owned the place," one veteran stagehand recalled in a later interview. Sightings are said to have tapered off after a 1970s revue reportedly offended his lingering sensibilities, though staff still swap stories of unexplained footsteps near the old private staircase. Operated by the Shubert Organization since 1948, the Belasco remains a working Broadway theater and a fixture of New York's theatrical ghost lore.
