Why is Bell Witch Cave said to be haunted?

Between 1817 and 1821, the family of farmer John Bell in Robertson County, Tennessee, reported being tormented by an invisible entity that scratched at walls, pulled hair, and eventually spoke in a female voice identifying itself as a witch, a haunting later chronicled in local histories and said to have been witnessed by future president Andrew Jackson. John Bell died in December 1820 after years of unexplained illness, and the entity allegedly took credit for poisoning him before vanishing from the farm. Local tradition holds the spirit retreated into this 490-foot limestone cave on the old Bell property, and generations of visitors touring it since have reported disembodied voices, sudden cold spots, and equipment failures inside its narrow passages. Now run as a private tourist attraction, the cave remains the physical anchor of one of America's most documented regional ghost legends.
