Why is Big Bay Point Light said to be haunted?

Perched on a bluff above Lake Superior roughly 24 miles northwest of Marquette, the Big Bay Point Light began operating in 1896 to guide freighters along Michigan's treacherous Upper Peninsula coast. Its ghostlore centers on an early keeper, sometimes named in local retellings as William Prior, whose adopted son reportedly died in a mill accident nearby around 1901; grief-stricken, Prior is said to have vanished on a walk into town not long after and was never found, though a body identified as his turned up months later, fueling decades of speculation. Guests staying at the lighthouse, which has operated as a bed and breakfast since the 1980s and remains an active aid to navigation, have long reported footsteps on the tower stairs after dark and a presence in the keeper's old quarters.
