LOCATION
Why is Butterworth Building said to be haunted?
Built in 1903 for the Butterworth & Sons mortuary, one of Seattle's most prominent funeral homes of the era, this steeply stepped building on First Avenue processed and embalmed thousands of the city's dead, including, local guides say, many victims of the 1918 influenza pandemic, before the firm relocated in 1923. Because of the slope of the hill, what looks like three modest stories from First Avenue drops five stories down to Post Alley behind Pike Place Market, and it is that lower level, once used for embalming and storage, that Seattle's long-running Market Ghost Tour singles out for its cold spots and sudden feelings of being watched. "Buildings that handled that many bodies tend to hold onto something," a tour guide has told groups since the 1990s. The structure, now privately owned, remains on the National Register of Historic Places within the Pike Place Market district.
