Why is Cahaba, Alabama said to be haunted?

Alabama's first permanent state capital, Cahaba flourished briefly at the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba rivers after 1820 before repeated flooding drove the legislature to relocate the capital to Tuscaloosa in 1826; a catastrophic 1865 flood later finished off the town as county seat, and it was largely abandoned by the early 1900s. Today the site survives as a ghost town of cellar holes, scattered chimneys and a slave cemetery, and visitors and researchers at the Cahaba historical site have long reported unexplained lights moving among the ruins at night, along with voices and footsteps in the empty streets where the old capitol building and courthouse once stood.
