Why is Chateau Laroche said to be haunted?
World War I veteran and Boy Scout troop leader Harry Andrews began building this stone castle above the Little Miami River near Loveland, Ohio, by hand in 1929, financing the land through Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper subscriptions and naming it after a French military hospital where he had recovered from wartime wounds. Andrews worked on the castle almost single-handedly for decades, living in it until his death in 1981, and staff and visitors since have reported his apparition still walking the grounds he built stone by stone, along with cold spots in the dungeon area and objects in his old living quarters found moved between visits. "He built this place with his own hands and, if you believe the volunteers, he's never really left it," a regional tour guide has said. Still run largely by volunteers today as a small museum, the castle's medieval towers and narrow stone stairways make it one of the more atmospheric roadside oddities in the Cincinnati area.
