Why is Colross said to be haunted?

Built around 1800 in Alexandria, Virginia, Colross carried its ghosts across state lines when the entire mansion was dismantled brick by brick and rebuilt in Princeton, New Jersey between 1929 and 1932. Two hauntings trace back to its original site: local tradition held that two children of the Mason family died on the estate and were buried in its vault, their spirits said to linger in the house long after; a second story, recorded by Alexandria resident Julian Taylor, describes at least two Union deserters executed against the mansion's high brick perimeter wall during the Civil War, their ghosts said to still walk the site of that wall. No record settles whether either haunting survived the move to New Jersey β€” the stories belong to Alexandria's oral history more than to Colross's new life as the administration building of Princeton Day School, but they still surface whenever the building's past is retold.
