Why is Donaldina Cameron House said to be haunted?
The Donaldina Cameron House is a 1908 building in San Francisco's Chinatown, built as the Occidental Board Presbyterian Mission House to serve as a safe house for Chinese girls and women, many rescued from trafficking and forced servitude in the surrounding neighborhood. Its longtime director, Donaldina Cameron, gave the building its present name after decades spent leading rescue operations from within its walls. That history, of women brought here in crisis, some after suffering violence and exploitation, has left the building with a reputation as a haunted house, its heavy past said to linger in its rooms and stairwells. Today it houses the nonprofit Cameron House, serving San Francisco's Chinese community, and has been a San Francisco Designated Landmark since October 10, 1971.
