Why is Epperson House said to be haunted?
Kansas City lumber baron Uriah Epperson completed this sprawling Tudor-Gothic mansion in 1923 as a wedding gift for his daughter Harriet, hiring an organ builder to install a massive pipe organ in the great hall. Harriet's fiancΓ© died suddenly before the wedding could take place, and within years students and staff at what became the University of MissouriβKansas City began reporting organ music playing on its own in the empty house, along with footsteps on the servants' staircase and a mysterious "cold room" that never warms. The building was closed to regular use in 1985 after a rash of unexplained incidents unsettled residents; UMKC still calls it one of the most haunted spots on any American campus. "You could hear the organ before you ever saw the house," one former student recalled decades later. Today it stands mostly locked, visited chiefly by paranormal researchers and Halloween tour groups.
