Why is Ferry Plantation House said to be haunted?

Ferry Plantation House stands near the site where, on July 10, 1706, colonial authorities subjected Grace Sherwood, the so-called "Witch of Pungo," to a ducking trial in the Lynnhaven River, throwing her bound into the water to see whether she would float, supposedly proving guilt, or sink. She survived the ordeal and lived another two decades, but the site's association with Virginia's most famous witchcraft case has shaped its reputation ever since. The current brick house, built around 1830 on land settled since 1642 as a ferry crossing, is said by staff and visitors to host eleven distinct spirits, including a Union soldier reportedly seen in an upstairs window and a woman in gray on the staircase. "Eleven is just the number we can account for," a longtime docent has told tour groups. Sherwood herself was formally exonerated by the Virginia governor in 2006, exactly 300 years after her trial.
