Why is Fort Adams said to be haunted?
Named for President John Adams and dedicated on July 4, 1799, the fort was rebuilt on a much larger scale between 1824 and 1857 as one of the largest coastal fortifications in the United States, designed to garrison up to 2,400 soldiers behind granite walls threaded with underground tunnels and powder magazines. Decommissioned after World War II, it sat largely empty for decades before becoming a state park, and the tunnels beneath the ramparts remain closed to casual visitors except on guided tours. Veterans of those tours describe sudden temperature drops underground, disembodied footsteps echoing off the granite, and a persistent sense of being followed through the unlit passages. Reenactors who camp on the grounds for historical events often trade stories of sentries glimpsed on the walls after the site closes for the night.
