Why is Franklin Castle said to be haunted?
In 1881, German immigrant banker Hannes Tiedemann began raising this Gothic stone mansion on Franklin Boulevard, adding turrets, gargoyles and a maze of hidden passages over the following decade. Several Tiedemann children died young in the house, and local rumor accused Hannes of darker secrets, including the murder of a niece and a mistress bricked into the walls. By the mid-20th century, owners reported disembodied crying, organ music with no player, and cold drafts sweeping the ballroom. Paranormal investigators in the 1970s claimed to record child-like voices on tape, cementing the house's reputation as "the most haunted house in Ohio." One caretaker described hearing "a baby crying behind a wall that had no room." Restoration has stalled repeatedly, and the castle remains privately owned, its turret windows dark above Ohio City.
