Why is Gadsby's Tavern said to be haunted?
Gadsby's Tavern, run by English innkeeper John Gadsby from 1796, hosted George Washington's last birthday ball in 1798 and was a hub of Alexandria's political life. Its best-known ghost story concerns the "Female Stranger," a young woman who arrived gravely ill with an unnamed companion in 1816, died within weeks in an upstairs room, and was buried nearby in St. Paul's Cemetery under a marker that names no one, reading only that she died "in the full assurance that her Redeemer liveth." Staff and guests have long reported a rustling of period skirts on the stairs near her former room and sudden chills at the same spot each October, on the anniversary of her death. "Nobody in Alexandria ever learned who she was, and that's exactly why she stayed," a museum docent has told visitors for years.
