Why is Gadsden Hotel said to be haunted?
Opened in 1907 in the border town of Douglas, Arizona, the Gadsden Hotel became famous for its grand lobby staircase of Italian marble beneath a 42-foot stained-glass mural β and for the moment during the Mexican Revolution when a soldier is said to have ridden his horse straight up the stairs, chipping one of the marble steps still pointed out to guests today. The hotel's border-town history, tangled with Pancho Villa's raids and the U.S. military's Pershing Expedition of 1916, has fed generations of stories about restless spirits in its upper floors, including a shadowy figure reported near the mezzanine and unexplained footsteps echoing down empty corridors late at night.
