Why is Great Salt Lake said to be haunted?
Utah's Great Salt Lake, the largest remnant of the vast Ice Age Lake Bonneville, has carried monster lore since Mormon pioneers arrived in the 1840s. Newspaper accounts from 1877 and 1893 described a huge, dark, serpentine creature surfacing off Antelope Island, sightings that briefly rivaled the Bear Lake monster stories in popularity across the territory. Fishermen and boaters on the lake's saline waters, nearly nine times saltier than the ocean, which allows almost nothing to sink or drown quietly, have long traded stories of shapes moving beneath the surface near the causeway. "Something that big shouldn't be able to hide, but out there it does," a local boat captain told a Salt Lake newspaper decades ago. The lake's dramatic shrinkage in recent years has renewed public fascination with what the receding water might expose.
