Why is Harrisburg State Hospital said to be haunted?

Opened in 1851 as the Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospital, this Harrisburg campus was the state's first public institution for the mentally ill, designed under the Kirkbride Plan that favored light, air, and orderly wings over simple confinement. Over more than 150 years of operation, thousands of patients passed through its wards, some enduring now-discredited treatments like hydrotherapy and insulin shock before the hospital modernized through the 20th century. It closed in 2006, leaving Kirkbride-style wings empty, and former staff and trespassers describe unsettling footsteps in locked corridors and sudden temperature drops in the old wards. Locals still call the abandoned buildings "the old State hospital," a fixture of Harrisburg ghost tours despite fences and no-trespassing signs.
