Why is Hot Lake Hotel said to be haunted?
A resort grew beside this thermal spring in eastern Oregon from the 1860s, but the hotel's grandest era began in 1907 when Dr. William Phy expanded it into a full sanatorium, using 208-degree mineral water to treat rheumatism, tuberculosis and nervous disorders for patients arriving from across the country. A 1934 fire gutted much of the wooden hotel, and the surviving Colonial Revival wing later served as a nursing home before decades of abandonment. Ghost hunters who explored the ruins before its 2000s restoration described surgical equipment left in place and reported voices and apparitions tied to patients said to have died during Dr. Phy's more aggressive treatments. Restored as an inn and artisan studio, the building still advertises its hot spring alongside its haunted reputation.
