LOCATION
Why is Hotel Colorado said to be haunted?
Opened in 1893 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, modeled on Italian Renaissance villas and built beside the town's famous hot springs, the Hotel Colorado hosted Theodore Roosevelt on several hunting trips and, according to well-worn hotel lore, was where a maid entertained his young children by stuffing a rag doll and calling it a "teddy bear," a story the hotel has long claimed as an origin point for the toy's name. Decades later during Prohibition, the hotel became a favored hideout for Al Capone, who reportedly kept a mistress in one of the upper rooms and posted lookouts on the roof to watch for police. Staff have long connected that room to reports of a sorrowful female presence, along with unexplained piano music drifting from the closed ballroom and cold spots on the stairwell once used by Capone's men to watch the lobby below.
