Why is Hotel Union Square said to be haunted?
Hotel Union Square opened at 114 Powell Street in San Francisco in 1908, later running a Prohibition-era speakeasy in its basement that counted crime writer Dashiell Hammett among its regulars while he worked nearby as a Pinkerton detective and drew on the neighborhood's fog and vice for his hardboiled fiction. Staff over the years have described a woman in period dress glimpsed in the stairwell near the old speakeasy entrance, vanishing when addressed, and cold drafts on the upper floors said to coincide with the anniversary of a Prohibition-era shooting some claim happened on the premises, though hotel records do not confirm the incident. Guests have also reported unexplained knocking on room doors late at night.
