Why is Jewett House said to be haunted?
Jewett House, formally the Milo Jewett House and once known as North Hall, is a nine-story Tudor-style dormitory on the campus of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Designed by Vassar art professor Lewis Pilcher and completed in 1907 to ease a housing shortage, the building was so poorly received at first that critics nicknamed it 'Pilcher's Crime.' Decades of wear led to a $21 million renovation completed in 2002, restoring a dormitory that now houses up to 195 students. Alongside its architectural reputation, Jewett has long carried a supernatural one: students have reported encounters with several distinct ghosts said to inhabit the building's stairwells and corridors, making it one of Vassar's most talked-about haunted dorms, even as the identities behind the hauntings remain campus legend rather than documented history.
