Why is Kenworthy Hall said to be haunted?

Built between 1858 and 1860 for planter Edward Kenworthy Carlisle in architect Richard Upjohn's asymmetrical Italianate style, Kenworthy Hall — also called Carlisle Hall — is the setting of one of Alabama's best-known ghost stories. During periods when the house stood empty, locals began telling of a young woman seen in the fourth-floor tower window, said to be waiting for a lover who never returned from the Civil War. Folklorist Kathryn Tucker Windham recorded the tale as "The Faithful Vigil at Carlisle Hall" in her 1969 book "13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey," cementing it in the state's ghost-lore canon. The house, now a National Historic Landmark, is not regularly open to the public, but the legend of the waiting bride endures in regional storytelling.
