Why is Lake Drummond said to be haunted?
Lake Drummond, a shallow tea-colored lake of unexplained origin at the heart of the Great Dismal Swamp, has been haunted in verse since Irish poet Thomas Moore visited in 1803 and wrote "The Lake of the Dismal Swamp," about a grieving man who paddles out nightly by firefly light in search of his dead betrothed. Local slaves and free Black communities who hid in the swamp before the Civil War added their own layer to the lore, describing a white doe or a phantom canoe seen gliding across the black water at dusk. "They made her a grave too cold and damp / For a soul so warm and true," Moore's poem reads of the drowned bride. Naturalists still cannot explain how the lake formed, theories range from a meteor strike to a peat-fire depression, which locals say only deepens its otherworldly reputation.
