Why is Leonis Adobe said to be haunted?
Built in 1844, this Calabasas adobe was home to rancher Miguel Leonis until his death in 1889. Reports of a haunting began in the 1920s, when new residents remodeling the house heard footsteps overhead and smelled soap β the scent the famously fastidious Leonis always carried. In the 1930s a woman leaning on a stair railing felt it crack beneath her, then felt an invisible hand pull her back before she could fall. Visitors have also described the ghostly figure of Leonis's wife, Espiritu Chijulla, in the hallway, whispering "Chichita" β her pet name for a granddaughter. Saved from demolition in 1962 and now a museum, the Leonis Adobe is considered one of the most persistently haunted addresses in Los Angeles County.
