Why is McRaven House said to be haunted?

Built in stages beginning around 1797 by Andrew Glass in what was then Walnut Hills — now Vicksburg, Mississippi — McRaven grew through the antebellum era into a grand home known during the Civil War as the Bobb House, when it served as a field hospital and was struck by artillery during the 1863 Siege of Vicksburg. Its dark reputation rests on genuine tragedy: Mary Elizabeth Howard, a young mistress of the house, died there in childbirth in 1836, and Confederate soldiers reportedly died of their wounds within its walls during the siege. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and Mississippi's Historic Preservation register since 1978, the house is regularly billed as "the most haunted house in Mississippi," with guides describing a woman in period dress on the staircase and cold spots concentrated in the room where Howard is said to have died.
