Why is Merchant's House Museum said to be haunted?

Hatter Joseph Brewster built this Federal-and-Greek-Revival townhouse at 29 East Fourth Street in 1832, and merchant Seabury Tredwell's family lived there for nearly a century. Gertrude Tredwell, the youngest of Seabury's eight children, was born in the house in 1840 and, after refusing to leave even as the neighborhood declined, died there alone in 1933 at age 93 β€” the last of her line, surrounded by furniture barely changed in decades. Visitors and staff since the house became a museum in 1936 have reported her apparition on the staircase and in her old bedroom, the scent of her favorite perfume with no visible source, and doors that close on their own. "People come for the architecture and leave believing in Gertrude," a longtime docent has said. Preserved as the only 19th-century Manhattan residence with its original exterior and interior intact, it is widely regarded as one of the city's most reliably haunted addresses.
