Why is Moonville, Ohio said to be haunted?
Little survives of Moonville, a coal-mining hamlet founded around 1856 in Vinton County along the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, beyond scattered foundations, a small cemetery, and the brick-lined Moonville Tunnel. At least a dozen people were struck and killed by trains on the isolated single-track line between the 1850s and the removal of the tracks in 1988, and those deaths seeded a body of railroad ghost lore still told on the Moonville Rail Trail. Hikers report a lantern-swinging figure near the tunnel mouth, said to be a brakeman killed there, and a "grave digger" who reportedly answers if you speak to him at the cemetery gate. The tunnel's stonework mouth has become one of the most photographed reputedly haunted spots in the American Midwest.
