Why is Murphys Hotel said to be haunted?

Murphys Hotel has operated in the Sierra foothills town of Murphys, California since 1856, when it served Gold Rush miners and later hosted guests including Ulysses S. Grant and, according to hotel tradition, Mark Twain, whose signature is claimed among those in an old guest register. Staff and longtime patrons describe cold spots in the upstairs hallway and a rocking chair in one corner room that has been photographed appearing to move between shots. Some employees attribute the activity to a miner who reportedly died of injuries from a bar fight on the property during the boom years, though no name or date has ever been firmly documented. The hotel is designated California Historical Landmark No. 267.
